Can Dying your Hair Cause Hair Loss?

Hair Loss

Millions of guys start noticing gray hair once they reach their mid-30s, and it just so happens that hair loss often occurs around the same age. If you’re using hair dye for men to cover your grays, this leads to a common question: Is hair dye making your hair fall out faster?

The short answer is no. Some guys lose their hair around the same time they dye it, but correlation doesn’t imply causation. Male hair dye doesn’t reach your hair follicles where the hair grows. Accordingly, it can’t disrupt the hair growth cycle.

It’s important to note, however, that not all dyes are healthy for your hair. Cheap dyes often contain harsh ingredients that damage your hair, strip away its natural moisture, and cause breakage.

In this article, we’ll show you exactly why hair dye for men can’t cause hair loss and how to color your hair without troubling your tresses.

Is Hair Dye really a Cause of Hair Loss?

Hair dye can’t penetrate your scalp and reach your hair follicles, where hair growth occurs. That means hair dye won’t slow down hair growth either.

When you color your hair with a semi-permanent dye like Cleverman, the pigment binds to the outside layer of your hair shaft. But the dye doesn’t penetrate the hair cortex or the pores on your scalp.

If you’ve been dying your hair and notice hair shedding, male pattern baldness (MPB) is the most likely culprit, not the dye. MPB (also called male androgenetic alopecia) accounts for 95% of hair loss in men. It’s a genetic condition that affects your sensitivity to DHT: a hormone that shrinks hair follicles.

Hair dye can’t interact with your genetics or your hormones, so it can’t be blamed for a receding hairline or thinning crown.

Bottom line: Male hair dye doesn’t cause hair loss, so you don’t have to choose between your natural hair color and no hair at all.

Does Hair Dye Damage Your Hair?

There are two ways hair dye could potentially damage hair: low-quality products and permanent hair dyes which weaken the hair shaft.

For starters, the cheap hair dye products at your local supermarket are often filled with harsh ingredients such as ammonia, resorcinol, and silicones. These chemicals strip the natural protein and moisture from your hair, making it brittle and prone to breakage.

You might save a few bucks, but what’s the point of having the color you want if your hair doesn’t look healthy? That’s why we ditched those nasty ingredients and formulated Cleverman with good-for-you ingredients like our organic triple-oil system.

The second thing to watch out for is permanent hair dye. Unlike semi-permanent color, the ingredients in these dyes lift your hair cuticle and penetrate deep into your hair cortex, which alters the actual structure of the strands.

Permanent hair color is especially risky if you’re trying to lighten or bleach your hair.

“Hair dyes that lighten hair from its natural color are the most disruptive as they contain high volumes of hydrogen peroxide,” notes Dermatology Times. “Peroxide is necessary to remove the melanin pigments from the hair shaft and replace them with blonde colors.”

Whether you want to hide a few grays or go from brown to blonde, make sure you use a high-quality hair coloring product to minimize the risk of side effects (like our hair dye for men).

Is It Safe to Use Hair Dye On Thinning Hair?

Yes—semi-permanent hair dye is safe to use, even if your hair is thinning. Remember: the dye only coats the outermost layer of the shaft and can’t reach the follicle, so it won’t cause additional shedding or thinning.

That said, you may want to avoid permanent dye if your hair is thinning. Ammonia and other harsh ingredients can weaken hairs. Not to mention the rubbing and combing during the coloring process can lead to hair breakage and shedding.

Keep Your Hair, Get Rid of Your Grays

With Cleverman, you don’t have to risk your hair health to cover your grays. We believe the results you get are just as important as how you get them. That’s why we developed a formula free from ammonia, parabens, sulfates, silicones, and other stuff notorious for damaging hair and skin.

Instead, we enriched our formula with natural ingredients that nourish your scalp and hair from the inside out while helping lock in color for breakthrough results.
